Year 3 & Year 4

Miss Flynn

Spring Term January - March 2026

Literacy

In literacy this term, our English text is How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. Pupils will explore the story’s characters, settings and themes, using their imagination to bring these mythical creatures to life. Through a range of engaging activities, children will develop their narrative writing skills by creating their own imaginative stories inspired by dragons and Viking adventures. In addition, pupils will learn how to write newspaper articles, reporting on events involving these mythical creatures while focusing on key features such as headlines, eyewitness accounts and formal language. This unit will support the development of creativity, vocabulary, and confidence in writing across different genres.

Maths

In maths lessons, pupils will continue to develop their understanding of multiplication and division, building confidence with calculations, problem-solving and the use of related facts. As the term progresses, children will move on to exploring perimeter, learning how to measure and calculate the distance around shapes. Later in the term, pupils will also be introduced to fractions, where they will develop an understanding of equal parts, fractions of amounts and fractions of shapes through practical and written activities.

Science

In science this term, Hartington class will be exploring states of matter, focusing on how solids, liquids and gases can change when temperatures and conditions are altered. Pupils will carry out a variety of practical experiments to observe processes such as melting, freezing, evaporation and condensation. Through hands-on investigation, children will learn to make predictions, record results and draw conclusions, while developing their scientific enquiry skills and understanding of how changes in state occur in everyday contexts.

History

In history this term, children will be exploring the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings, investigating how these groups invaded and settled in Britain. Pupils will learn about their daily lives, including homes, food, beliefs, and social structures, as well as the reasons behind their successful invasions. Through a combination of research, discussion, and hands-on activities, children will gain a deeper understanding of how these historical peoples influenced life in Britain and shaped the world we know today.

Geography

In geography this term, children will be exploring our interconnected world by developing their map-reading and compass skills to locate countries and understand their positions. The focus will be on North and South America, with pupils comparing geographical features, climates, and cultures to those in Britain.
